Most cities and counties have an economic development corporation, usually referred to as an EDC. Before we get started, what does an EDC do?

Economic development corporations (EDC’s) are created to help with the economic development and growth of a city or county and ins some cases a region through the regional EDC. They are generally created as a not-for-profit entities – 501(c)(4), Social welfare organizations: Civic leagues or organizations not organized for profit but operated exclusively for the promotion of social welfare however is some cases they may be for profit.

Marketing for EDC’s is just as important as for a commercial entity or business. They need to market and promote their city or county in competition to their peers, attract  new businesses, promote their advantages, for example if they are close to a shipping port, major rail lines and highways, they need to promote their transportation and logistics advantage.

EDC’s need to identify their target audience (ideal clients are specific businesses)  and create a marketing plan to establish an action plan to find avenues to reach these clients and to engage them. EDC’s need dedicated resources to use multiple marketing techniques such as direct mail, email marketing, social media marketing, partnership development with developers and businesses, build a referral network and much more. An EDC needs to create a welcoming, professional online and mobile marketing presence with user friendly sites and relevant content.
